Weekend Projects

Coupeville

Our town puts on a whopper of a Memorial Day Parade.  Starting with a flyover by one of the NAS Whidbey helecopters, followed by flags, military heroes, and half the town.   Marching bands, church groups, scouts, preschoolers, firefighters, and the praire tractors from the Sherman and Engle farms.  Good old fashion meeting and greeting is had by all.  Hot dogs and ice cream at the town park along with a presentation from the Mayor conclude this grand event.

Beforeafter 022

When I was a kid, a holiday weekend meant a project was about to begin.  One year we enclosed our porch, another we built a new deck and still another we poured a new cement slab for our bbq area.  We got busy with some projects around the house this weekend because the weather was just perfect.  I have been stock piling paint projects, weeding needed to be done, bark needed to get down, and planting finished.  Here are a few of the paint projects I got completed from my Friday Finds Stash.

Beforeafter 004 ChandaftMookie's new light...we search all over IKEA for the black chandelier and was finally told they painted the display light, so we did too!

70'slamp  Memorailproj109 002I found this very cute shaped lamp (2.99) but it need some help.  After a coat of lacquer black and a new shade, it's perfect!

Chairbf  ChairaftI love my little beach chairs but they were looking a little ragged.  Found this beautiful apple green paint at Home Depot.  Just saw the same chairs on the cover of Sunset Magazine in hot pink.  Very cute!

Candle  Candleaft I'm love'n this green!!!

Cupholder  Holderaft This is to hold all my fabric scissors in the studio.

Urn  Urnaft Found this urn for just $2.00, looks awesome black.

Lesson of the Week:  Never walk away from something great just because it's the wrong color.  Always look at the shape, style and possible function of an item to determine if it's a good buy.  Mookie gave me that, "what are you thinking, that's not going in my room" look when I first showed her the lamp.  Now that it's painted, she loves it.  Had I not shown it to her first she would have thought it was from Target.

Have a great week!

Friday Finds

Ok...so Friday Finds actually turned into weekend finds this week due to the small turnout of venues.  I found some beautiful 70's pillow cases (I almost have enough to make my quilt), a pair of wooden candle holders, some Irish coffee mugs for my Mom's bar, two cool tuperware containers...in AQUA, a mug holder that I'm going to use to hold my sewing scissors, a totally ugly urn that will be painted and used for graduation, and an anniversary mug and best wishes mug.  Woo Hoo!

Fridayfinds

Also picked up awesome Apple Green Rustoleum spray paint at Home Depot this weekend and I can't wait to open it.  I have two beach chairs in the yard that need a fresh coat.  Plus, I think my little mug holder would look cute apple green too.  I'll take photos to share when I get them done.

Updates

Hope everyone had a wonderful Mother's Day.  Just in time for Mother's Day, my vintage apron package arrived on my door step.

Package

Very nicely done withvintage trim and hand embroidery on bodice.  All my favorite beach glass colors...blue, green, pink!

Apron2 Detail  Trims Goodiesdetail

My package included three milk glass pieces, a vase, a small bowl and a salt shaker(which I filled with Paula Deens house seasoning).  A table scarf, a cook book, tons of little trims and laces, buttoms, a hanky, another aqua bowl, and a beachy tray.  I've been totally spoiled.  Thanks a million Maudina!!!  One of the cutest parts, she wrapped the trims and lace around sea shells..Love it!

Been busy in the studio working on aprons, coffee cozies and teacher gifts for the end of the year.  Here is a cute Mom and Daughter set I put together for one of my DH's clients.

Momdaughterset

Daughter Mom Can't wait to see a picture of them wearing them.

Celebrated LittleMan's birthday with all his buddies.  They spent the entire time skateboarding and reluctantly stopped to eat and have cake.  Happy Birthday, dude!

Just finished a new Staging.  The home is vacant and for sale.  A few accessories is all it needed to give the buyers a little lived in feel.  I usually work with furnished homes but these are fun too.

Kit Mbath Bath Fp

Clean and simple is the key in a Staging like this.  Just give the clients an idea of how it's going to look.  They are buying the house, not the accessories.

Mookie is finishing up Track Season.  One last meet, then she(we) are off to prelims and finals.  She has done very well this year and throwing further each week.  Go Mook!

Mookie (2)

Finally, I got a glimpse of this lovely creature out my office window, grabbed the camera and headed down the street.  He perched there about 15 minutes or so before he took off.  He was beautiful.

Eagle1  Have a great week!  Check in tomorrow for Friday Finds.

Tuesday Tip...5 W's

Knowing the 5 W's of decorating will help you in your decision to hire a decorating professional.  Remembering back to my school newspaper days the 5's are the:  Who, What, When, Where, and Why of what ever you're covering.  Let's get started!

Who?  Who should you hire to come into your home and help you with your decorating and color delemia?  Not all decorators are created equally.  Always look for a professionally trained decorator with a full time business in the field.  A decorating professional who has invested in a degree and other training will be able to offer you the service you expect.  Also be sure your decorating professional has insurance to cover any damages that could occur to your property.   Professional ogranizations like ASID, CID, or IRIS are great referrances for a professional in your area.

I am a Professionally Trained and Certified Interior Decorator and Redesigner.  I have a BA in Home Economics from Fresno State University, Certified Decorator by CID, and Certified Redesigner by IRIS.  I have been in Business for the past seven years.

What? What kind of decorator do I need?  If you want to start to taking out walls and moving plumbing, you need a professional contractor or Interior Designer who can help you with drawings and permits.  If you want to repaint, redesign the space, redecorate, or purchase new furniture, you need to call me.

I provide professional decorating and color advice for all your interior projects.  Color matching, new colors, redesign, and personal shopping.

When? When should you call a professional?  If you have more than four color swatches taped to your wall, you should call me.  If you want a whole new look without the cost of replacing all your furniture and accessories, you should call me.  If you have a stash of accessories behind your sofa because you don't know where to hang them, you need to call me.

I can help you through all the sometimes confusing decisions to make your entire look come together.  From floor to ceiling, and everywhere in between.  One day redesign and accessory hanging available.  My eyes bring a fresh perspective to any space.

Where?  Where can I find a professional decorator?  Look to professional organizations, networking groups, phone books, friends or relatives to find a professional in your area.

I am proud of the fact that most of my business comes from referral.  It is a great testament to the type of service I provide.  I am very grateful to my local clients, their friends, and families for supporting my business through the years.  I am a professional member of CID, IRIS, and Women Take Wing.

Why?  Why hire a professional decorator?  A professional decorator like any other professional can save you time, money and headache.  Knowing the job is done right the first time, on time and on budget makes a remodel or redesign a pleasure.  A full time professional decorator will often have a team of other professionals ready to jump in and help complete your job quickly.

I have a team of professionals that I have worked with for years and I don't hesitate to refer them when needed.  Anything from woodworking to wallpaper, lighting to flooring, painting to drapes; I've got great contacts!  Saving you time and money is what I like about my business.  A redesign utilizes all your existing furnishing and accessories to give you a fresh new look.  My paint consultation takes one hour and you will have colors for several rooms not just one.  My decorating consultation will give you as many ideas as you can possibly write down.  Fast, effective, and budget friendly.

Thanks for checking in-

Happy May Day!

Happy May Day!

Rhodie

All my Rhodies are starting to bloom and I just love it.  This one is covered head to toe with these beautiful large white blooms.  It's an amazing sight to see all these plants in full bloom.   For a wonderful public display of Rhodies, Check out Meerkerk Gardens in Greenbank, Washington.  They are open daily from 9-2.  We always used to head out there for their Mother's Day Celebration to enjoy all the flowers and music in the gardens.

Our Linus Project event was a huge success.  We had some 30+ women either sewing or tieing quilts of all different sizes and prints.  I was amazed at how beautiful all of them were.  I couldn't wait to turn the quilts to see the prints revealed.  I know so many children are going to love and adore them.  Our goal for the day was 100 quilts.

Linusme Linusmookie Thegirls

Mookie and I put together seven quilts each.  Mookie even got to work on the brand new, out of the box PFAFF!  She's been spoiled!   Many thanks to our hosts at Pacific Fabrics who were just awesome.  We had hourly door prizes, discounts for shopping, and lots of great goodies provided by all the gals.  We will definately be back next year.

Friday Finds!

Fridayfinds5109

Friday Finds were so much fun today.  Every couple of Friday's my DH and I have a "date morning".  We drop off the kids, grab some coffee, and spend the morning searching for teasures.  Today I found these awesome candle holders in blue, with sea stars and shells embossed in the glass (they still have the tags on them).  Four totally cute cocktail napkins (I'll probably loose these to Mookie), a dainty plate from Austria, a cross stiched framed piece of Admiralty Head Lighthouse, a cute little vase (great color for fall), and this awesome large jug (stamped 1929 on the bottom). Everything here, under $30.00.  Whoo Hoo!

Dorm Living...OH MY!

With graduation right around the corner, the horror for many parents and the thrill of most seniors will soon focus on the big move to college and dorm living.  It really isn't too early to start your planning now.  One of the biggest challenges is the lack of space in a shared room.  Finding great storage options and shopping wisely (sales) will keep your move budget friendly.  Here are some great tips and suggestions to getting you ready for the big move.

Dormprep Pick a color scheme and stick with it. For this project I choose black and white with accents of pink and green.  Pull from items you already have and love.  Bring a little of your old room, to your new one.

Maximize Your Closet Space.  Take only what your really need.  Look at it like you are packing for a trip.  Bring your favorites only.  It's better to have fewer clothes to wash anyways.  Put outfits together after laundry day(including jewelry), so you can jump out of bed and be on your way...this will save hanger space and time.

Organizing the closet is the most important.  Start with some hanging organizers.  Hanging shoe organizers can hold totes, shoes, magazines and Cd's.  Sweater organizers easily organize in separate cubbies; use them to fold jeans, paper supplies, towels or books.  Belt organizers hold more than belts; use them for headbands, cell phone charger, extension cords and belts.

Shoehanger Sweatershelf Storage2 Storage

Milk crates are a life saver in a dorm.  They can be use in the closet (on a shelf or stacked), stacked under your desk for supplies, stacked to make a table, and can also be used as a stool.  Office boxes also stack very easily, hold lots of items, and keep your space looking clean a tidy.

Creating A Work Space.  Basic dorm rooms will provide you with a bed and a desk.  Some will have shelving already installed some don't.  Create a little privacy for yourself (especially if you get the bed that right in front of the door), by picking up a hollow core door at the local home store.  Simply slide the door between the bed and the desk and you have an instant wall.

Door organizer On the desk side, hang an shoe organizer from the top of the door to hold office supplies, note cards, sunglasses, concert tickets...whatever you need handy.  Hang a bulletin board for messages, notes, photos, etc.  This one is made from an old frame.  Remove the glass and replace with cork tile (walmart).  Replace the backing to the frame and hang.  A hanging file is useful for project papers, binders and magazines.  I cut some scrapbooking paper to fit the front panel so it would go with the rest of my accessories.

Deskacce Hideaways Pushpins2 Color coordinate all your accessories.  If everything coordinates, the room will flow better and look more spacious.  Another bulletin board idea is to make one out of the hard insulation sheet (Home Depot).  Sheets are sold in different sizes and thicknesses so choose on that fits your space.  Simply duck tape or hot glue fabric to board and embellish.  70's canisters make one of the coolest storage items.  These can hold office supplies, candies, snacks, headbands, clips, etc.  You can find them in lots of different colors and prints at antique stores or thrift shops.  You gotta have tack pins for your bulletin boards so why not make some.  These are made with a fabric covered button kit.  Simply cut the fabric and use the tool included in the kit to press and secure the fabric.  Clip off the button loop and glue to a tack pin.  Lots of sized are available, you choose the fabric...easy peesy!  File...Don't Pile!  Create an easy file system that's portable and functional.  Files can easily be moved or tucked away for privacy.  I covered these files with more scrapbooking paper so the match.  Magazine holders can store lots of items; printer paper, class projects, and calendars.

Bbback Bbdetail Floders Floderinside

Windows and Walls:  IKEA has tons of inexpensive drapes and panels to dress up your room.  They often have extra length since some dorm rooms have very high ceilings.  If you're in a cement block room you can soak lightweight curtains or sheets in liquid starch, wring out well, attach to the wall like wallpaper.  Fabric will dry and stick to the walls.  At the end of the semester the fabric will peel right off the wall.  Give it a little wash with soap and water and it's good as new.  If you have drywall walls, attach the fabric to a piece of luan.  Sold in sheets similar to plywood (Home Depot), and hold in place with your bed.  These make decorating a empty wall easy.  Use groupings of mirrors or frames to create photo collages. Find cool frames for photos or fabric.  Frame your own art by using scrapbook paper and cards.

Other Dorm Must Haves!

Under the bed storage, bed risers, laundry bag, plastic removable hangers, travel air bags for bulky items, label machine, area rug, clip lights, poster goop, duck tape (it works on everything even fixing a hem), and full sized garbage can.  WHAT?  Did I just say full sized garbage can.  Yes, I did!   This is probably one of the greatest storage tricks I have ever been taught.  Thanks to my friend Randy.  Get a new (NOT USED) galvanized can, a 45 inch table round (both available at home depot), and a 60 inch or larger round table cloth.  Place the can between the two beds (where a night stand would go), then place the table top on top of the can, cover with cloth.  You have now made yourself and your roommate a beautiful side table (you get to share) that doubles as a huge storage for blankets, pillows, coats, shoes, etc.  No one but you will know there is a garbage can under there. SEE!

Garbagecantable Living03[1] This second one I found in the Seattle Times.  Isn't it beautiful. The base is made from a vintage English can and other recycled items.

Remember to shop your home first for items you can use for storage.  Check with grand parents and friends so see what treasures they might have for you to use in your new digs.  Recycle, reuse and re-purpose items to save money and the earth.  Have fun and good luck in the Dorms!

Sewing for a Cause!

Banner[1]

Mookie and I are off tomorrow to participate in a Linus Project Event at the Everett Pacific Fabrics Store.  For those who don't know, Project Linus provides beautiful handmade blankets to children who are seriously ill, tramatized, or otherwise in need.  This is near and dear to my heart because of an accident my sister was in when she was young.  At age eleven, she was hit by a telephone repair truck and was in a coma for two weeks. During her long stay in the hospital, I saw what a comfort blankets or stuffed animals donated by local community groups meant to the kids and families.  Just a little something to cling to, snuggle, and sleep with.  When I heard about Project Linus, I knew I wanted to get involved.  All the Pacific Fabrics Stores have been collecting fabrics from local customers for the past several months and tomorrow we are getting together to complete as many blankets as possible.  Mookie and I will be official "Blanketeers".  For more information on Project Linus go to www.projectlinus.org.  and for more information of Pacific Fabrics Project Linus events go to www.pacificfabricfabrics.com.  Check back for photos on Monday.

From the Studio

Just finished a couple new projects.  This first one is for my niece Tara.  She call a few weeks ago and wanted to order a new apron.  She is very petite and princess like so she will look just lovely in this little number.  I love the dainty fabric...hope she does too!

Taraapron And it's reversable!

This other one is for our school auction.  Every year each class puts together a wonderful basket for our largest fundraiser of the year.  The 5th grade decided to do a Washington State Basket full of goodies from and made in Washington.  I added this cute apron so we had something homemade to add.

5thgradeapron This apron can be yours along with all the other goodies, if you're the highest bidder!  The Oak Harbor Christian School Auction is being held on May 1, at the Elks Lodge starting at 5:30.  For tickets, call 675-2831.

Friday Finds

Happy.....is what I am today!  After dropping the kids off at school, I stopped by a garage sale not far from my home.  I found these lovely lamps for $12.00 (for the pair). Aren't they wonderful!  I don't have to do a thing with them.  The wiring is good, shades just needed a light dusting, and they are off to the bedroom.  Which will propel me into my next project...repainting the bedroom.  I've had this on the books for a while, even have the color choosen and everything.

Fridayfind

So here they are...wait till the new paint goes up.  They are perfect!!

Bedroom

You can also see I found some beautiful linens.  Blue and white my favorite.  They need a good cleaning but are in perfect condition.  $4.50 for the table cloth and $2.00 for the 6 cocktail napkins. YAH!

Have a happy Friday!

Enjoying the Sun, Island Style!

Olympics

I never could have imagined as a child that I would be living on an Island. There is no place I'd rather be than near the ocean where I draw so much of my decorating inspiration and peace of mind.  Island living is a bit different.  No Outlet Mall, No Costco, No Macys.  We are a little layed back, things move a bit slower(Island Time), and some stores are still closed on Sunday.  We benefit from the wonderful salmon fishing off the beach, crabbing, clamming, great beaches, prairies, tons of camping, and ocean breezes.

Penncove

Our town is a place where you know all the business owners by name, the ice cream shop knows your favorite flavor, the kids at the grocery store help get your groceries in the car, and everyone in the Christmas parade is your neighbor.

Mount baker

We enjoy the breath taking views of the Olympics, Penn Cove, Mount Baker, and on a clear day Mount Rainer.  Through my travels, I have always been thrilled with the adventure and sights of other towns, states, and countries.  But as the saying goes:  There is no place like Home!

Mtbaker2

Just wanted to share all the loveliness outside my home today!
